Comfrey Oil vs Comfrey Salve: What’s the Difference? & How to Use Each
Share
Comfrey has been called “knitbone” for centuries—no magic, just a hardworking herb rich in plant compounds like allantoin that help keep skin feeling cared-for. But should you reach for comfrey oil or comfrey salve? Here’s the practical, no-nonsense guide.
What’s the difference?
-
Comfrey Oil (infused): Leaves slowly infused in a stable carrier (we use cosmetic sunflower oil) to create a light, pourable oil ideal for massage and general skin conditioning.
-
Comfrey Salve (balm): The same infused oil set with beeswax into a semi-solid balm. Great for targeted application and staying power.
When to use each
-
Choose Oil when you want glide for massage, larger-area application, or a pre-/post-activity routine.
-
Choose Salve when you need a focused, longer-lasting layer that resists rubbing off.
How we make it (the short version)
-
Slow infusion of leaf only (we don’t use root) → strain → bottle as oil, or blend with beeswax for salve. Small-batch. Handmade in North Yorkshire.
How to apply
-
Oil: 2–6 drops in palms, warm, then massage into clean skin 1–2× daily.
-
Salve: Pea-sized amount, melt between fingers, press onto the area; reapply as needed.
Safety notes
External use only. Patch-test first. Avoid broken skin. If you’re pregnant, nursing, or have concerns, speak to a professional.
FAQs
-
Does comfrey stain? The herb can be dark; let it absorb before dressing.
-
Oil first or salve? Apply oil, then salve to lock it in.
